PRODUCT INFO

Kalocsa is a city in South Hungary and is the home of this well-known Hungarian embroidery style that features flowers and eyelet work. It was born in the second half of the 19th century when originally the needlework was only white and the patterns were simply holes. The development of Kalocsa needlework was due to the appearance of printing at Kalocsa in 1860 and became much more colourful at the beginning of the 20th century when the durable colour threads became available. Since then six main colours have been used: claret red, pink, yellow/orange and shades of blue, green and violet. .The motifs started as clusters of grapes and many types of flowers like lilacs, lilies of the valley, roses, forget-me-nots, violets and went on to include tulip, lily, paprika (which Kalocsa is famous for) and ears of corn.
