PRODUCT INFO

The tradition of felt making in Hungary dates back to the Bronze Age and involves layering brushed wool, soaking it in warm water, and rubbing it together until it fuses. Typically household felt textiles and clothing feature hand-cut felt applique with scalloped edges and elaborate and colourful embroidery. Hungary has a tradition of folk embroidery that goes back to at least the twelfth century and probably much before and is found in almost every Hungarian village. The Matyó art of embroidery is unique to the Matyó community in the northeastern region of Hungary. A solid embroidery technique or satin stitch, which is similar to the embroidery of Kalocsa in the south of Hungary, it features patterns in the form of flowers, leaves, and geometric shapes typically in red, green, yellow, blue, and black on either white or black clothes, often made of felt.
