Hungarian Matyó hand-embroidered cushion

Hungary has a tradition of folk embroidery that goes back to at least the twelfth century and probably much before and is found in almost every Hungarian village. The Matyó art of embroidery is unique to the Matyó community in the northeastern region of Hungary. A solid embroidery technique or Satin stitch, which is similar to the embroidery of Kalocsa in the south of Hungary, it features patterns in the form of flowers, leaves, and geometric shapes typically in red, green, yellow, blue, and black on either white or black clothes, often made of felt.
