PRODUCT INFO
Dionizy Purta, a sculptor of rural origins and gifted with a rich artistic imagination, is one of Poland's renowned folk sculptors. He was born on May 22, 1941, in the village of Lewonie, Mońki commune, Podlasie Voivodeship, where he spent his childhood and youth. He worked briefly as a blacksmith at the Lublin Truck Factory and in a mine in Silesia, eventually returning to his hometown of Białystok.
Even in his youth, he demonstrated manual skills. He made whistles, wove baskets from juniper and pine roots, and showed an interest in root carving, which in adulthood developed into a passion for woodcarving.
He retired in 1980 and devoted all his free time to sculpture. He created his first bark sculpture in 1971, which he fondly keeps at home to this day.
He most enjoys carving fantastical birds, angels, Madonnas, figures of saints and Christ, and shrines. The sculptor's works, constructed from numerous, often inconspicuous elements, are characterized by unique forms and a distinctive, multicolored polychrome that unifies them and brings out their expressiveness. The artist has developed his own unique style, characterized by naivety, simplification, and geometric forms.
Dionizy Purta is highly creative. As he says, "If I'm not carving, I'm sick ."
